Story Behind It
The history of the Monastery of Archangel Michael has roots stretching back to the 12th century. Tradition holds that it was founded on the exact spot where the ascetic Venerable Luke (Όσιος Λουκάς) found the icon of the Archangel Michael in a cave. Obeying a divine command, Luke built a small chapel there around 1110 AD.
Today, the monastery's immense spiritual significance is defined by two key elements. First, it is a Dependency (Metochion) of the Holy Monastery of Philotheou on Mount Athos, giving it a strict, authentic Athonite character. Second, it is a major pilgrimage site because it houses a sacred relic: a fragment of the Holy Nail, believed to be one of the nails from the Crucifixion of Christ. The church is dedicated to Archangel Michael, the protector and patron saint of Thassos.
