Alana is the main beach of Nea Iraklitsa, a cosmopolitan destination that combines organized fun with the tranquility of the sea. With shallow waters and fine sand, it is the ideal choice for families with small children, while the many options for food and coffee make it a complete destination for all ages.
Story Behind It
The name "Alana" (meaning "square" or "threshing floor") is intrinsically linked to the history of Nea Iraklitsa. When the first inhabitants, refugees from Herakleia of Eastern Thrace, arrived in the early 20th century, the beach was the first open space where they set up their makeshift shelters.
For them, this shore was the threshing floor of their new existence. They laid out their hopes there, they started building their homes there, and there, their children played for the first time on the sand of their new homeland. Every time you swim in the shallow, warm waters, you are actually swimming in a place of survival, restart, and hope.
Why We Love It
We love Alana because it's a beach that has it all. You don't need to take anything with you but your swimsuit. It has shallow, warm waters, perfect for endless play. You can enjoy your coffee at one of the beach bars, savor a meal of fresh fish at the nearby tavernas, or stay until the evening for a drink. It is the epitome of the Greek summer experience, without having to stray far from the urban fabric.
Fresh Tips
- Arrive at the beach before 10:30 AM, especially on weekends, to easily secure a parking spot and the best place right by the water. You’ll skip the hassle and enjoy the absolute serenity before the sand fills up with crowds.
- Check for northern winds if you want the sea to be crystal clear and flat, perfect for SUP and relaxed swimming. If you prefer playing with the waves, a southern breeze turns Alana into the most fun spot in the area.
- End your day with a stroll at the Iraklitsa marina for some traditional loukoumades. It’s the "official" closing ritual for every local and the best way to recharge your energy after a long day of swimming and sun.
