Story Behind It
The history of this complex of beaches is directly intertwined with the marble mining industry that has shaped the modern history and economy of Thassos. Over the years, active quarries operating just above the coastline naturally deposited crushed white marble onto the shores.
Because of marble’s exceptionally high light reflectivity, the sun rays bouncing off the white seabed intensify the shallow waters, producing that brilliant, surreal turquoise hue. Saliara, the most famous cove of the three, famously drew its name from saliaropetres—the smooth, flat white stones that local school children historically used as writing slates.
Today, the three consecutive coves offer varying atmospheres, from high-energy beach bars to secluded luxury hotel retreats.

- Road Conditions: Access is via a dirt road that cuts directly through active quarries. Drive carefully, expect bumps, and be prepared for your car to get covered in white dust.
- Arrive Early: Due to their massive popularity, these bays fill up incredibly fast during peak season. Arriving early in the morning is essential to secure a spot and enjoy the scenery in relative peace.
- Boat Access: If you want the ultimate experience, visiting by boat or water taxi is highly recommended, offering a magnificent perspective of the glowing shoreline from the sea.
- Vathi Beach Layout: A large portion of Vathi Beach is organized by a nearby luxury resort for its guests.
- However, unorganized public space is still available on the edges of the beach if you prefer to bring your own gear.
