Story Behind It
The Tower's history is heavily tied to the need to protect the coasts and the commercial activity of ancient Thassos. Dating back to the Hellenistic or Roman period (circa 3rd Century BC – 2nd Century AD), such structures were common at strategic points on the island, which had developed a significant commercial and maritime network.
Its primary role was likely to oversee the sea, warn of dangers, and control access to the nearby port. Constructed with famous Thassian stone, the building stands out for its sturdy, monumental masonry that has allowed it to survive through the centuries despite its isolation.
As for the toponym, the name "Thimonia" derives from the local area—possibly referring to the thimonia (stack) of grain or other agricultural products that were gathered in the port area before being transported elsewhere.
